At the FAQ link above, I have a few FAQs about my process specifically. They’re less about copywriting in general and more about what it’s like to work with me.
Here are the top FAQs I get from local business owners when they hear I’m a copywriter. I started this over in an Instagram post last month and needed to share more thoughts about it. Here you go!
People still read what I write on my website??
YES!!! Omg when will people realize that they read all the time?
First of all, even if no human reads your website, Google (and all the other search engines) is crawling your site all the time to see what you’re about and how you help people. If you want to be at the top of search results, you can’t do it without a lot of words on a website.
But people do read your website. More than ever, I think Millennials hate surprises. They want to know as much about a place as possible before arriving, which means they’re combing through your menu, learning about your top products, and figuring out the parking situation.
Your website should tell people exactly why they should choose you over someone else. Over and over again.
Email marketing works??
I don’t know why this is so shocking to everyone, but yes, people read their emails. Once an email list gains momentum, I hear again and again that it’s driving the most sales for the business. The business owner says, “Oh, I don’t care what you post on social, but this is what we need in the email this week.” “Can you send an email so we get some more bookings on the calendar?” They see results INSTANTLY
Start emailing your list.
I say that as someone who never emails her list, but at least I know it can work.
Isn’t social media the only thing I need?
While more and more people are using social media as a search engine, they do look at your website for real information.
The algorithms aren’t friendly towards businesses, so the best way to get in front of your audience is a solid SEO practice that leaves you at the top of website search engines, not social.
If you’re counting on social media for your big break, it might happen (especially if you’re a fun Gen Z brand with a mission to promote). The rest of us need to work the old-fashioned way.
Can’t I just use AI?
Blahhhhh
Of course, you can. You are allowed to do whatever you want.
But as a local business owner, you probably want to add the human touch to your business. Right? That’s why you’re not Amazon or McDonalds.
Soon, we’ll all be able to recognize AI generated content, and we won’t want to read or promote it. And I definitely don’t want to promote services spreading fake news and chaos across the country.
But, AI is a fact of life now, and I think it can help with content ideas, excel tricks, coming up with a plan for your week. But it shouldn’t be writing your entire website for you.
Sometimes, I use it for blog posts, but I usually need to re-write the entire post. So again, I just use it for ideation.
Last but not least…
Copywrite vs. Copyright
I don’t give out legal advice. I do marketing.
Thank you.
